On July 27, 2017 the Embassy of Haiti in Washington DC hosted another evening of Trivia Night Thursdays. Attended by diverse members of the community, this segment included a brief dance lesson where guests learned the basics of Kompa, a dance music and modern meringue in Haiti with European and African influence. The genre was popularized following the 1955 creation of the band Conjunto International by Nemours Jean- Baptiste. Kompa (or Compas in French) is the main music of many countries such as Dominica and the French Antilles. Whether it is called zouk, where French Antilles artists of Martinique and Guadeloupe have taken it, or kompa in places where Haitian artists have toured, this style of dance music is very influential in the Caribbean, Africa, Cape Verde, Portugal, France, part of Canada, South and North America.
The event is part of the Embassy’s larger mission to offer diverse American audiences in the Washington metropolitan area a glimpse into Haiti’s rich history, culture, heritage and highlight its historical significance in the Americas. Trivia Night Thursdays is also an extension of the weekly open house series which takes place every Wednesday and Thursday from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.
