The Embassy of Haiti Hosts a Book Signing and Discussion Featuring Haitian American Author Gessie Belizaire
Of the 107 individuals who registered to attend the free book signing and discussion event held at the Embassy of Haiti on Thursday, August 16th, a whopping 80 percent of the registrants, from near and far, graced the occasion with their presence.
“To write and to publish a book” was just a glimmer in the author’s eye just three years ago, but after being approached with the idea to turn her Master’s thesis into a book, Gessie Belizaire felt compelled to make it a reality. The book signing and discussion allowed guests to discover Belizaire’s book UnMet Potential, a comparative analysis between Haiti and Guinea written to inform and to inspire readers to “go back home where ever home may be and to place the knowledge that they gained in the service of their country”. Belizaire shared with the attendees what she was able to learn after writing the book and why she felt the book needed to be written. She also encouraged her audience to challenge their mode of thinking when discussing and acting on behalf of developing countries like Haiti and Guinea.
The presentation struck a chord with Casey Murphy who remarked, “I thought the speech was very engaging. It was cool to hear about the author’s family background and what inspired her to write the book. I left with more knowledge than what I went in there having. If I were to compare what the experience felt like I would say it’s like hearing a band or an artist on the radio and having the opportunity to hear that said band or artist live….there is nothing quite like it. I felt connected on a deeper level by that experience. It was such a great event. I ate, I drank, I laughed, I made connections with a diverse group of people, all while greeting and buying the author’s book. It doesn’t get any better than that!”
With the support of sponsors such as Haitian Swagg, Cayenne Art, and Empower Through Play, Belizaire was able to give all attendees an opportunity to participate in what turned out to be an entertaining raffle. The event also provided attendees with the chance to interact with a diverse group of people while savoring delicious appetizers and the Embassy ‘s signature punch, and enjoying a captivating sunset from the second floor of the Chancery. It truly was a night to remember.
