The 216th Anniversary of the Haitian Flag and Ambassador’s Welcoming Reception
On Saturday, May 18, 2019, the Embassy of Haiti in Washington, DC hosted a cocktail reception to commemorate the 216th Anniversary of the Haitian Flag. The celebratory gathering also served as a welcoming reception for the newly appointed Chargé d’Affaires and former Minister of Defense, Ambassador Hervé H. Denis. The Embassy opened its doors to members of the Haitian community, the Diplomatic corps, officials from the Haitian and U.S. Government, Congressional staffers, members of the arts and media community for the occasion.
Upon arrival, the guests were welcomed with a signature cocktail sponsored by Port-au-Prince Authentic Haitian Cuisine by Chef Don Berto and Haitian gourmet hors d’oeuvres specially prepared by Magalie Pradel. As they enter the 19th century French architectural building, the guests were greeted by the angelic and regal sound of Cellist Benjamin Gates, a young African-American artist who has received many accolades from heads of states for his unique ability to merge the sound of the old and new.
Hosted by the Embassy’s former Director of Education and Culture, Mr. Dave Fils-Aime began the program with a surprising trivia night session, which included questions around the history and background of the national flag. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Weibert Arthus, Minister Counselor of Political Affairs, historian and author gave a brief historical discourse on the journey of the flag. The Permanent Representative of Haiti to the Organization of America States, Ambassador Leon Charles, provided special remarks on the occasion and shared the curriculum vitae and background on the newly appointed Chargé d’Affaires.
At the start of his remarks, Ambassador Hervé H. Denis paid homage to the courageous men and women who contributed to Haiti’s emancipation from oppression and slavery. Ambassador Denis invited the guests to reminisce on the great significance of this patriotic day, and in the same spirit, reminded the audience of the great challenges that currently face the country and those that lie ahead. He continued to express his honor to serve and represent the great nation of Haiti in the nation’s capital and highlighted his plans for the Embassy, including strengthening the relationships with the community at large and continuing the larger mission to shift Haiti’s narrative away from charity towards economic investment.
Ambassador Denis also seized the opportunity to thank the community for a warm welcome and introduced an exciting initiative, an exhibit featuring Haitian painters strictly from the Diaspora. He closed the evening by recognizing the individual contributions of each member of his staff and other members of the community such as Haitian-American Jean-Pierre, whose latest art exhibit “Future Memoirs” is currently on display at the Embassy until June 20th.

Le 216è Anniversaire du Drapeau Haïtien et Réception de Bienvenue à l’Ambassadeur
Le Samedi 18 Mai 2019, l’Ambassade d’Haïti à Washington, DC, a offert un cocktail-réception pour commémorer le 216è Anniversaire du Drapeau Haïtien. L’événement avait aussi pour but de souhaiter la Bienvenue au nouveau Chargé d’Affaires et ancien Ministre de la Défense, Ambassadeur Hervé H. Denis. A cette occasion, l’Ambassade a ouvert ses portes aux membres de la Communauté Haïtienne et du Corps Diplomatique, aux officiels des Gouvernements Haïtien et Américain, aux membres du Congrès, des communautés artistiques et médiatiques.
Dès leur arrivée, les invités furent accueillis avec un cocktail signature préparé sous la direction de Chef Don Berto, propriétaire de “Port-au-Prince Authentic Haitian Cuisine” et des hors d’oeuvres gourmet préparés spécialement par Magalie Pradel. Au fur et à mesure qu’ils entraient dans l’immeuble à l’architecture française du 19è siècle, les invités tombaient sous le charme de la musique à la fois angélique et solennelle de Benjamin Gates, un jeune celliste Afro-Américain qui a reçu de nombreuses marques d’appréciation pour la manière unique dont il marie les mélodies anciennes et modernes.
L’ancien Directeur de la Section Culture et Education de l’Ambassade, M. Dave Fils-Aimé, dans son rôle de Maître de Cérémonie, débuta le programme avec une séance surprise de “trivia”, comprenant des questions relatives à l’histoire de la création et l’évolution du drapeau national. Tout de suite après, Dr. Weibert Arthus, Ministre Conseiller aux Affaires Politiques, historien et auteur, présenta un bref exposé sur l’historique de notre bicolore. Le Représentant Permanent d’Haïti auprès de l’Organisation des Etats Américains, l’Ambassadeur Léon Charles, offrit une présentation spéciale pour l’occasion et partagea le curriculum vitae ainsi qu’un résumé de carrière du nouveau Chargé d’Affaires.
Au début de son discours, l’Ambassadeur Hervé H. Denis rendit hommage aux courageux combattants – hommes et femmes – qui contribuèrent à la libération d’Haïti des chaînes de l’esclavage et de l’oppression. L’Ambassadeur Denis convia les invités à se souvenir de l’importance capitale de ce jour patriotique et, dans le même esprit, évoqua pour l’assistance les grands défis auxquels notre pays doit faire face aujourd’hui et ceux que lui réserve l’avenir. Il continua en indiquant à quel point il se sentait honoré de servir et de représenter la vaillante nation Haïtienne dans la capitale américaine et décrivit ses plans pour l’Ambassade, tels que renforcer les relations avec la communauté en général et poursuivre la grande mission de changer la narration au sujet d’Haïti en s’éloignant du concept de charité mais en se tournant vers l’investissement économique.
L’Ambassadeur Denis profita de l’occasion pour remercier l’assistance de l’avoir accueilli si chaleureusement et annonça une initiative excitante, l’exposition d’oeuvres de peintres Haïtiens de la Diaspora uniquement. Il termina la soirée en reconnaissant les contributions individuelles de chacun des membres de son staff et d’autres personnalités de la communauté comme le peintre Haïtiano-Américain Jean-Pierre, dont la dernière exposition artistique “Future Memoirs” est actuellement ouverte à l’Ambassade jusqu’au 20 Juin 2019.
L’Ambassade se lance dans une nouvelle entreprise et nous vous invitons à maintenir votre solidarité alors que nous poursuivons notre mission vers une Haïti plus progressive.
