INITIAL ASSESSMENT OF 7.2 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE IN SOUTHERN HAITI
Washington, D.C., (August 17, 2021) The Embassy of the Republic of Haiti to the United States of America wants to inform the public that the preliminary assessments by Haitian authorities have revealed a dire situation in the Southern part of the country. The three most affected areas are the Department of the South, the Department of Grand Anse, and the Department of the Nippes. As of the afternoon of August 17, 2021, the authorities have identified 1941 deaths, 9900 injured or wounded, and more than 85,000 houses damaged or destroyed. The number of casualties is expected to change as more search and rescue operations continue to take place.
The Prime Minister, Dr. Ariel HENRY, has designated the Centre d’Opérations d’Urgence National (COUN) to coordinate the distribution of aid throughout the affected area. He has furthermore selected three Ministers from his cabinet to assist directly with the various necessary logistical efforts. A list of material and resources needed has been circulated to our national and international partners to address the immediate response to this catastrophic event. It’s also important to note that Tropical Storm Grace has further complicated the already fragile situation on the ground.

BILAN PARTIEL SUITE AU TREMBLEMENT DE TERRE DE MAGNITUDE 7,2 DANS LE GRAND SUD D’HAÏTI
Washington, D.C., (17 août 2021) L’Ambassade de la République d’Haïti aux États-Unis d’Amérique souhaite informer le public que l’évaluation des dégâts par les autorités haïtiennes révèle une situation désastreuse dans la péninsule du Sud du pays. Les trois zones les plus touchées sont les Départements du Sud, de la Grand Anse et des Nippes dans cet ordre de proportion. A compter de l’après-midi du 17 août 2021, les autorités ont recensé 1941 décès, 9900 blessés et plus de 85000 maisons endommagées ou détruites. Le nombre de victimes devrait être revu à la hausse au fur et à mesure que les opérations de recherche et de sauvetage se poursuivent.
Le Premier Ministre Dr. Ariel HENRY a désigné le Centre d’Opérations d’Urgence National (COUN) pour coordonner la distribution de l’aide dans les zones affectées. De plus, il a sélectionné trois ministres de son cabinet pour aider directement aux différents efforts logistiques nécessaires. Une liste de matériels et de ressources essentiels a été distribuée à nos partenaires nationaux et internationaux afin de répondre dans l’immédiat à cet évènement catastrophique. Il est également important de noter que la tempête tropicale Grace a compliqué la situation déjà fragile sur le terrain.
